Freedom Walkers: the Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott by Russell Freedman
The author tells of the sacrifice and courage of thousands of African Americans who boycotted Montgomery's buses for 381 days--jeopardizing their jobs and safety--to protest racial segregation on the city buses. Descriptions of drivers getting up at dawn to take others to work and accounts of the planning by civil-rights lawyers show how much work and coordination went into making the boycott successful, and helps the reader experience what it was like to be there.
