Literacy Councils
Some adults are not able to read or write well enough to meet the requirements of modern society. Others lack a high school diploma or GED which would make them more employable. Literacy Council employees and volunteers tutor adults in reading, writing and studying skills, and help them prepare for the General Education Diploma exam. In addition, English as second language (ESL) assistance can be established for families through the Literacy Councils.
The Meherrin Regional Library System provides tutoring space and assistance for the Emporia-Greensville Literacy Council at the Richardson Memorial Library. If you know an adult who needs help with reading or ESL, or would like to volunteer to tutor those who need help, contact Dale Temple at the Adult Education Center at 1-800-321-6081.
The Brunswick County Literacy Council is located in the Chicago Building at St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville.
