Genealogy Centers
Genealogy Centers at Brunswick County Library and Richardson Memorial Library offer local genealogy information, local history documents, blank genealogy research forms, and staff willing to help patrons with their searches.
The
Pritchett Local History and Genealogy Room in the Brunswick County Library
contains all of Dr. Pritchett's working papers, articles, and books, including
his book titled Civil War Soldiers from Brunswick County, Virginia.
Other local history books, documents and items donated by individuals and
groups are also available. The Brunswick County Historical Society recently received a
donation of family letters written in the 1920's, known as "The Purdy Letters"
for the family who wrote them. The letters describe life in Lawrenceville
and Brunswick County during the 1920s and will be available for research in the
Brunswick County Library Local History and Genealogy Room.
The Genealogy Center at Richardson Memorial Library is maintained in partnership with The Greensville County Genealogy Society. Society members have provided files with the genealogical records for several local families, information on Greensville and Emporia cemeteries, a collection of obituaries from The Independent Messenger from September 8, 1996 through December 31, 2000, and other valuable information. Richardson Library has bound copies of The Independent Messenger from 1973 through 1982, and July 1984 through December 1985. Funeral cards from the early 1980s to present are arranged alphabetically in binders. Available on microfiche are U.S. census records for Greensville County and other Virginia localities from 1790 to 1930; local birth, marriage and death records from 1853 to 1935; Greensville land tax books from 1782 to 1850; and a 1991 Guide to County Court Records. Several publications and articles written and donated by local author and anthropologist, Ray Sasser, as well as other local history books may be found in the Richardson Reference collection.
